On Friday, June 10, the New Jersey Special Olympics hosted their annual "Law Enforcement Torch Run." The mission of this event is to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.
This year, over 3,000 law enforcement officers took to the streets of their local communities as part of 26 different routes to help carry the "Flame of Hope," covering a distance of over 750 miles throughout the state of New Jersey!
In an effort to help promote this cause, our very own School #10 participated in the event and went above and beyond to do so. Over the weeks leading up to the event, the entire school took part in a "Penny War," as the classes came together to help raise money for the cause. The school ended up raising over $1,000, which was added to the overall donation from the Garfield Police Department.
Officer Noah Murphy, School #10 Principal Jennifer Alfonso, and Teacher Jessica Delahanty pose for a picture with two students as they present the Garfield Police Department with their donation for the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
Not only did the School #10 community help raise money, but also joined in on the run as well! Our fourth and fifth-grade students proudly ran with our law enforcement team, as they were cheered on by the third-grade students as they passed by the school.
The fun didn't end after the run concluded! In recognition of their efforts, the students were rewarded with a Pizza Party!
Way to go James Madison School #10!
